Nigel Farage accidentally backs second referendum

A new referendum promise from the Brexit Party would allow the 6.1 million people who signed a petition to revoke Article 50 to call a new vote on our membership of the EU.

Nigel Farage has accidentally backed a second referendum in the Brexit Party manifesto he launched earlier today.

The party’s so-called Contract with the People promises to “introduce Citizens’ Initiatives to allow people to call referendums, subject to a 5m threshold of registered voter signatures”.

It means that Remainers would be able to force a second referendum on our membership of the EU. Over 6.1 million people signed an official petition to revoke Article 50 earlier this year.

This is now the third time the Nigel Farage has backed such a policy. Under his leadership, UKIP twice promised a new referendum if “5% of the national electorate signs a petition”.

And that’s not counting the time the Brexit Party leader said that “in a 52-4 referendum this would be unfinished business by a long way.”
