Embarrassing day for Skwawkbox as Momentum accuse the blog of talking “bollocks”

Alt-left blog Skwawkbox has been accused of spouting "bollocks" after claiming that Momentum is backing Liam Byrne MP for West Midlands mayor.

Skwawkbox suffered a series of humiliations yesterday in its coverage of Liam Byrne MP’s announcement that he is running for West Midlands Mayor.

First the alt-left blog run by Steve Walker reported that “Labour sources” believed the Birmingham MP’s campaign would receive support from Momentum, or at least Jon Lansman. A Momentum spokesperson told the site its story was “bollocks”, while Lansman explained he wouldn’t support anyone until a “Momentum process” (no word on whether it need be democratic) chose a candidate.

Lansman then took to Twitter to claim the story was the result of “a malicious briefing by sectarian elements in CLPD and nevertheless published by Skwawkbox whose reports are often false or misleading”. The Red Roar finds itself in the unusual position of agreeing with the founder of Momentum on this occasion…

The tweet has sparked a row on the far-left. Twitter account, Rachael Swindon tweeted that she would never vote for Lansman again, while Skwawkbox accused Lansman of libel.

Skwawkbox was then tipped off that Byrne had claimed in an email to have the support of John McDonnell. The site contacted the Shadow Chancellor for a quote, presumably in the hope that Byrne had overstated his backing. However, when McDonnell replied to confirm his support, saying “we have worked together on the economic policy development and actually he’s been brilliant”, Skwawkbox went ahead and published the story anyway. Byrne will surely be delighted that the alt-left site has informed its readership of McDonnell’s support.

Finally, the blog published Byrne’s response to their request for comment in full, including a section about the death of his father which he specified was not to be used.

Good day at the office, Steve.
