Tory leadership hopeful Boris Johnson has accepted a £50,000 donation from a millionaire financier.

The donation for “office and staffing costs” revealed in the latest Register of Interests was made by Jon Wood, the millionaire owner of the Aedos Advisers hedge fund.

Aedos is the new name of Wood’s SRM Advisers hedge fund which he moved to the UK from tax haven Monaco in 2010.

Wood courted controversy during the financial crisis by demanding compensation from the government after the forced nationalisation of Northern Rock as the bank’s biggest shareholder.

The millionaire financier blamed Labour for the financial crisis, handing half a million pounds to David Cameron’s Tories to “get the country out of the dreadful mess that the Labour Party left it in”.
