A letter published by alt-left blog, Skwawkbox, which defended Jeremy Corbyn over antisemitism and was claimed to be signed by 29 rabbis, has been revealed to be a fake.

The letter apparently stated that the Jewish faith leaders were “shocked to learn about those that are claiming in the media that the Jews of Britain are outraged towards the Labour party’s respected leader Jeremy Corbyn.” It also dismissed the evidence that British Jews are considering leaving the country if Crobyn were to become Prime Minister.

It was claimed the signatories were members of the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations (UOHC) and was circulated in Orthodox Synagogues over the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashana. It followed a letter in June signed by 68 rabbis from right across the Jewish tradition accusing Jeremy Corbyn of ignoring the Jewish community.

The Jewish Chronicle has today revealed, however, that the letter was, in the words of the UOHC, “fake news.” The Jewish Community Council of North London described the letter as “fake and bears no authority from any of the assigned names.”

The article remains on the Skwawkbox website, unamended.
