Labour council candidate mails Israel rant to members

Labour council candidate in Brighton shares statement with members that appears to deny Israel’s right to exist.

A Labour council candidate in Brighton has shared a statement with local party members that appears to deny Israel’s right to exist.

Patcham ward candidate Jerry Gould wrote that “I have no doubt the modern state of Israel is a racist endeavour”, adding that he “felt in good company” in “questioning the right for the modern state of Israel to exist”.

In what must rank as one of the most bizarre criticisms of the IHRA definition of antisemitism yet made, Gould appears to compare it with “the 1994 constitution of the British National Party, in that there is only one clause with which I disagree”.

Some of Gould’s remarks may escape censure under the IHRA definition now adopted by the party, as it is widely agreed to allow for fierce criticism of the modern state of Israel up to and including describing it as racist, but his apparent denial of Israel’s right to exist could be prohibited as an example of “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination”.
