Fun times in North West Durham, where Laura Pidcock continues to struggle with the perception in her local party that she’s a carpetbagger whose ambition dwarfs her ability.

With the left-wing MP keen a have an obedient and unquestioning local party as possible, she tried to take full advantage when the position of chair of her local CLP became vacant.

Local party members were bombarded with emails, calls, texts, emails and promoted Facebook posts demanding they support Momentum-endorsed candidate Fiona Nichol.

They responded by voting for Nichol’s rival, Phillip Marshall.

One local party insider said: “Laura’s office went all out on getting Fiona Nichol elected I doubt they’ve done any actual casework in weeks. For all the good it did.

“It’s the classic Corbynite mix of authoritarianism and incompetence. God help up if these people actually got into power, it’d be like the Stasi staffed by Mrs Brown’s Boys”
